Debra Degregorio
"A Sea of Change"
shown April-May 2009

The two dimensional work of artist Debra DeGregorio has ranged from large abstracted, natural forms drawn in charcoal, to bright prints, printed on both sides and treated with beeswax.  Her work, using straight forward imagery, arranged in a flat space, has a certain empathy. The prints include ships and oceans, canoes and rivers, charms and trees and birds. These symbols allude to the relationship of oneself to one’s environment, describing issues like transformation, direction, being ‘charmed,’ illusion,  reality, and grounding. This thread of exploration using, a personal, symbolic language tells a sort of story, a map to intangible places, both personal and universal.

Currently Debra is also exploring ceramics, creating low relief pieces using fanciful
imagery of sea life that derive from medieval maps, and letter forms. DeGregorio
received her BFA from Kent State University, and is a post baccalaureate student at the University of Akron, determining at present where she will be going for an MFA.

She has shown in Cleveland, Akron, Kent, Sandusky, Columbus, Pittsburgh, and
Virginia Commonwealth University.
